How Much Water Should You Drink Per Day?
The amount of water you need depends on your body weight, activity level, climate, and health status. A commonly cited guideline is eight 8-ounce glasses per day (64 oz), but this is a rough estimate. A more personalized approach uses your body weight as the baseline.
A general formula is to drink half your body weight (in pounds) in fluid ounces per day. So someone who weighs 140 lbs would need about 70 oz of water daily as a baseline, before accounting for exercise, heat, or other factors.
Signs of dehydration include dark yellow urine, fatigue, headaches, and dry mouth. Most people need more water than they think -- especially on hot days or days with exercise. Always consult your healthcare provider if you have specific hydration-related health concerns.
